Traditional May Festival in Nice

The Fête des Mai is a traditional spring festival deeply rooted in Niçois culture.
Its origins date back to ancient seasonal celebrations, later shaped by religious and village traditions.
Today, it remains a vibrant expression of local identity, bringing together music, dance, language and cuisine in a setting that feels both simple and meaningful.

The Fête des Mai takes place in the Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez (gardens of the cimiez antic city),
a beautiful open-air setting surrounded by history and nature.
It is known for:
its peaceful atmosphere and residential character
its Roman ruins of Cemenelum
its museums, including the Musée Matisse
its gardens and century-old olive trees

Perched on the hills above Nice, the Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez is best reached by bus or Uber.

Bus 5 departs from Deloye / Dubouchage in the city centre and takes you directly to Cimiez.
The stop, located just a few steps from the entrance, is Arènes / Musée Matisse.

Please note that buses can be quite crowded on Sundays, especially during the festival.

If arriving by train at the Nice Ville train station,
the bus stop Desambrois is located at the base of the hill, around a 10-minute walk from Nice Ville station.

Throughout the day, a relaxed and convivial atmosphere unfolds under the olive trees.

The festival takes place outdoors, on natural ground.

Comfortable shoes are recommended, as you will be walking on grass and earth.
On sunny days, a hat and sunglasses will make the experience more enjoyable.
