Traditional May Festival in Nice
What is the Fête des Mai
The Fête des Mai is a traditional spring festival deeply rooted in Niçois culture.
Its origins date back to ancient seasonal celebrations, later shaped by religious and village traditions.
Today, it remains a vibrant expression of local identity, bringing together music, dance, language and cuisine in a setting that feels both simple and meaningful.
More than a festival, it is a moment where the spirit of Nice can be experienced in its most authentic form.
This video offers a glimpse into the atmosphere of the Fête des Mai.
Dates
Held on Sundays throughout May.
Cimiez gardens in a few words
The Fête des Mai takes place in the Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez (gardens of the cimiez antic city),
a beautiful open-air setting surrounded by history and nature.
It is known for:
its peaceful atmosphere and residential character
its Roman ruins of Cemenelum
its museums, including the Musée Matisse
its gardens and century-old olive trees
How to get there
Perched on the hills above Nice, the Jardin des Arènes de Cimiez is best reached by bus or Uber.
Bus 5 departs from Deloye / Dubouchage in the city centre and takes you directly to Cimiez.
The stop, located just a few steps from the entrance, is Arènes / Musée Matisse.
You can view the route and timetable here:

Please note that buses can be quite crowded on Sundays, especially during the festival.
If arriving by train at the Nice Ville train station,
the bus stop Desambrois is located at the base of the hill, around a 10-minute walk from Nice Ville station.
What to expect during Festival
Throughout the day, a relaxed and convivial atmosphere unfolds under the olive trees.
You will encounter:
Traditional Niçois dances performed in costume
Live music and choral performances
Local families gathering for picnics
Moments where visitors are invited to join in songs and celebrations
Food stalls serving traditional specialities, with long wooden tables where people gather to eat in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
The setting, with its century-old olive trees and views over the gardens, creates a peaceful and welcoming environment.
Food at the Fête des Mai
Food is an essential part of the experience.
Local specialities are prepared on site, including the famous socca, along with other simple regional dishes.
Staying for a relaxed outdoor lunch is very much part of the tradition.
Many locals also bring their own picnic and spend time sitting or lying in the shade of the olive trees, enjoying the atmosphere at their own pace.
Practical notes
The festival takes place outdoors, on natural ground.
Comfortable shoes are recommended, as you will be walking on grass and earth.
On sunny days, a hat and sunglasses will make the experience more enjoyable.
You may also wish to bring a light cloth to sit or lie down in the shade of the olive trees, as many locals do.
What to wear
A relaxed and elegant daytime outfit is ideal.
Light fabrics, comfortable shoes, hat and sunglasses will allow you to fully enjoy the experience.
As the event takes place outdoors, practical comfort remains essential while maintaining a polished look.
My recommendation
Arrive in the late morning and stay through lunch.
Take your time, find a place under the olive trees, enjoy some local food, and simply observe the rhythm of the day.
One of those rare moments where Nice feels not only seen, but truly felt.
