Breil-sur-Roya & the Train des Merveilles: A Mountain Escape from Nice

Travel from the Mediterranean coast into the green mountains of the Roya Valley and discover a peaceful village
surrounded by lake, rivers and beautiful scenery.

Only a little over an hour from Nice by train, Breil-sur-Roya feels like another world.
Here, the Mediterranean landscape gives way to forested mountains, clear rivers, walking trails and traditional villages shaped by centuries of French and Italian history.
Breil-sur-Roya is one of my favourite places to escape to from Nice, particularly in summer, when I love leaving the heat of the coast behind and swimming in the cool waters of the Roya river. It is an easy and memorable day trip from Nice, but the village can also be used as a
peaceful base for two or three days of exploration in the Roya Valley.

Why visit Breil-sur-Roya and the Roya Valley?

Breil-sur-Roya offers a beautiful combination of nature, history and authenticity.
The village lies at around 300 metres above sea level, between the Mediterranean coast and the mountains of Mercantour National Park. Its houses stretch along the Roya River and an artificial lake. Despite being only around 25 kilometres from the sea, the atmosphere is calmer, greener and distinctly mountainous.

It is an especially lovely destination for travellers who enjoy:

The railway station is within walking distance of the lake, village centre, restaurants and several walking routes.

The Train des Merveilles: a journey full of wonder

With a name meaning “The Train of Wonders”, the journey already sounds enchanting. And it truly is.

The railway connects Nice with Breil-sur-Roya and Tende, passing through the Paillon, Bévéra and Roya valleys. As the train climbs away from the Mediterranean coast, it crosses viaducts and bridges and passes through tunnels carved into the mountains, including extraordinary spiral tunnels designed to help the railway gain altitude.
Through the window, the city gradually disappears.
You will see forests, rocky gorges, mountain streams and small villages perched above the valleys.

The railway journey is not simply a means of reaching Breil: it is one of the highlights of the day.

During the principal tourist season, a guide-conférencier accompanies a morning departure from Nice and provides commentary about the landscape, local heritage and villages along the route.
The dates and timetable change from year to year, so check the official TER information before travelling.
In 2026, the commented service leaves Nice-Ville at 9:32 and operates daily between 1 June and 2 October, as well as on weekends in October.

A village shaped by many histories

Breil-sur-Roya occupies an important natural passage between the Mediterranean, Provence, Piedmont and the Italian coast.

For centuries, travellers, merchants and muleteers passed through the Roya Valley, transporting goods between the port of Nice and the mountains beyond the Col de Tende. The village’s geographical position explains the mixture of Niçois, French and Italian influences still visible in its architecture, food and local dialect.
Archaeological discoveries indicate that the area was inhabited from the Neolithic period. Over the centuries, Breil came under the influence of the Counts of Ventimiglia, Provence and the House of Savoy before becoming part of France in 1860.
The village also experienced a particularly difficult period during the Second World War. It was occupied by Italian and German forces, and much of its population was transferred to Turin until the spring of 1945.
Today, Breil has preserved a strong local identity, a remarkable religious heritage and a deep connection with olive cultivation.

What to see and do in Breil-sur-Roya

Walk around the lale
Enjoy an easy walk beside Breil’s peaceful lake, with lovely views of the village, bridges and surrounding mountains. Small rowing boats may be available in summer.

Explore the historic village
Wander through Breil’s old streets and discover its Italian-influenced architecture, Baroque church and historic chapels among the olive groves.

Climb the Cruella Tower
A short uphill walk leads towards the medieval Cruella Tower, with beautiful panoramic views over the village, lake and Roya Valley.

Taste the local specialities
Discover the flavours of the Roya Valley, including olive oil, olive paste, handmade boursouzes and traditional sugellis pasta. A market is held on Tuesday mornings.

Swim in the Roya River
In summer, I love escaping the heat of Nice and swimming in the cool, clear river near Breil.

Outdoor activities in and around Breil
The Roya Valley is also known for canyoning, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and mountain biking. These activities should be booked with qualified local professionals and chosen according to the season, weather and water conditions.

Villages to explore around Breil-sur-Roya

Staying for two or three nights gives you time to continue deeper into the Roya Valley.

Saorge
Perched dramatically above the Roya gorges, Saorge is one of the most remarkable villages in the region. Its steep streets, vaulted passages and houses appear to cling to the mountainside.
The seventeenth-century Monastery of Saorge stands above the village and combines beautiful architecture, peaceful gardens and magnificent views.
The railway stop is called Fontan-Saorge, but the historic village is considerably higher than the station. there is the 25 bus line that goes from Menton to Tende passing by Fontan-Saorge train station and Saorge village. Check that bus time table here and plan your connection accordingly and carefully.

Tende
Continue to the upper Roya Valley to discover Tende, a historic mountain town close to the Italian border.
Tende is home to the Musée des Merveilles, devoted to the prehistoric rock engravings found in the nearby Vallée des Merveilles. It is also a starting point for hiking and exploring the landscapes of Mercantour National Park.

La Brigue
Another charming mountain village known for its stone houses, narrow streets and remarkable religious heritage. The sanctuary of Notre-Dame-des-Fontaines, sometimes called the “Sistine Chapel of the Southern Alps”, is situated outside the village and contains an exceptional cycle of fifteenth-century frescoes.

Sospel
Situated on the railway route between Nice and Breil, Sospel can be visited separately or included in a longer stay. The village is known for its medieval bridge, colourful façades, Baroque cathedral and mountain fortifications. It alsoprovides access to numerous walking and cycling routes.

How to travel from Nice to Breil-sur-Roya

“Le train des Merveilles” is a TER regional trains that connect Nice-Ville with Breil-sur-Roya.
The journey covers approximately 51 kilometres and takes around 1 hour 10 minutes on average, with the fastest services completing the route in just over an hour. Timetables vary according to the day and season, so check both your outward and return trains before leaving Nice.

You can buy tickets on the SNCF Connect website or application.
Search for: From: Nice-Ville // To: Breil-sur-Roya
As a general indication in 2026, a standard Nice–Breil ticket costs approximately €12 each way. Prices and reductions can change, so use the fare displayed by SNCF on your chosen date as the definitive price.

My practical tip at Nice-Ville station: Trains towards Breil and Tende often depart from one of the shorter platforms situated at the far eastern end of Nice-Ville station.
The walk to these platforms can take several minutes, so arrive at least 15 minutes before departure. Always look at the station screens, as the platform may change.
For the best views and the seasonal commentary, arrive early enough to find the guide before boarding the Train des Merveilles.
