The Cimiez Gardens are one of the most important and fascinating historical sites to visit in Nice, a place that offers a true journey through several major eras that shaped the soul and identity of the city.

Here, I share with you the stories of the people who lived on these grounds, those who shaped Nice across centuries, and those whose influence contributed to the creation of its unique culture.

If you already know Nice, you may be aware that it is a profoundly cosmopolitan city.
Perhaps you have taken my Old Town tour and have discovered the many cultural influences that shaped its identity.
With this tour, you will realise that the history of Nice is even more captivating, and how much more there is to uncover.

Designed to be both comfortable and rich in information, the experience unfolds in two parts:
1. A seated introduction
We begin with a relaxed moment in a café place garibaldi or at the Cimiez garden « buvette », where I introduce the history we explore during this tour.
Drinks and food are at your own expense.
2. An immersive walk
We then continue with a gentle and engaging walk through the gardens and the surrounding historical sites.

I will tell you about:
The Roman era, under Emperor Augustus, when the ancient city of Cemenelum stood here. You will see its archaeological remains, still visible in the gardens.
The medieval period, which added new spiritual and architectural layers to the hill.
The late 18th century and the rise of Cimiez, when Queen Victoria made this district one of the most prestigious and fashionable places in Europe.
The early 20th century, when the painter Henri Matisse lived here, leaving behind an artistic presence that can still be felt in the gardens and in the Matisse museum built in his honor nearby is home.

You will see :
• The Roman amphitheater and the remains of the thermal bath of the city of Cemenelum
• The peaceful gardens with their centuries-old olive trees
• The Cimiez Monastery and the church of Notre-Dame de Cimiez
• The grand palace built for Queen Victoria and where Henri Matisse also lived for many years
• The rose garden, offering beautiful panoramic views of the city, the sea and Castle Hill
• The 17th-century genoese style villa that houses the Matisse Museum
• The elegant palaces and bourgeois buildings from 19th century, many listed as historic monuments
…and many other wonders that make Cimiez one of the most meaningful and beloved places in Nice.

Cimiez is a place where history, elegance, art and nature come together.

It is also a serene and deeply meaningful site cherished by locals.
Under the ancient olive trees, you may see residents having picnics or gathering to play pétanque, adding a warm and authentic touch to the serenity of the gardens.

There are two possible meeting points, depending on your preferences and how you arrive in Nice:
Place Garibaldi, followed by a short bus ride together up to the Cimiez garden
